About

PETER GONSALVES is from Mumbai, India. He was born in a family that experienced centuries of political, economic, social and cultural changes which transformed an archipelago of verdant islands into a congested and chaotic metropolis. His trilogy on Gandhi's communication through cloth and clothing is the result of twenty years of experience in the promotion of media education for a culture of peace.

A priest and Salesian of Don Bosco, Peter founded Tej-prasarini  (Light-spreader), an educational publishing house in 1995, and in 2002, coordinated the first five-language web portal at the Salesian headquarters in Rome. He is a member of SIGNIS, a world association of Catholic communicators and served as president of INTERSIG (2004-2007), its international section. He has Master's diplomas in Philosophy (Jnanadeepa, Pune, 1982), Journalism and Communication (Symbiosis, Pune, 1993) and Media Education (British Film Institute, London, 2003).

In 2007 he completed his PhD in Communication at Salesian Pontifical University, Rome, in the Faculty of the Sciences of Communication and was the Dean between the years 2015-2018. Here he taught 'History of Media', 'Methology of Scientifc Research' and 'English' and continues to be a mentor for the students of the doctoral program. From 2017 to 2022, he was one of the thirteen Consultants to the Vatican's Department of Communications

He currently teaches 'Media Education' and 'Peace Communication' and is the author of a Gandhian trilogy. The first two volumes are based on the history and comunication analysis of Gandhi's use of clothing to liberate India from British rule. The third,  elaborates on the impact that Gandhian theory and practice had and continues to have on the Popes and the Catholic Church. Moreover, in a recently-concluded research, he studies the nexus underpinning 'peace' and 'communication' in the educational philosophy of Don Bosco, thereby bringing to light the rich culture of peace for members of the Salesian Family to lay claim to.

Gonsalves' spare-time interests are songwriting, photography and watercolour art.
